Ma once pursued a career as a stage actor, but his intense self-awareness made him realize he might not be suited for the role. Several jobs followed, yet none felt like the “calling” he was searching for. Seeking clarity, he set off for Japan, hoping a change of scenery would spark new ideas. It was there that he met Pidan, a tiny black kitten. “So adorable,” he thought. That moment marked the beginning of a new chapter.
During the days spent with his little black kitten Pidan, Ma struggled to find a suitable litter box—even in Japan, renowned for its advanced industrial design. The functional ones were unappealing, while the attractive ones lacked practicality. This frustration sparked an idea: why not create one himself? Using his savings, he launched the project. In 2015, Pidan’s first product, the igloo, a Cat Litter Box, was born. Not only did it win a Red Dot Design Award that year, but it also marked the first step in Pidan’s journey as a brand.
In 2023, they broke new ground again, creating the pet industry’s first MSC certified product with the Alaskan Wild Salmon series of pet food. (Seafood with the MSC blue label has come from a certified sustainable fishery.)
Take their cat food, for example. Branded as peace-of-mind Cat Food, it avoids gimmicks or lofty claims. Instead, it focuses on what matters: high-quality chicken, simple recipes, and single protein sources. No miraculous effects, no promises of turning your cat into a superhero—just reliable, stable nutrition. Transparency is paramount: every detail of the product lifecycle is fully traceable, from ingredient sourcing and supply chains to production origins. Independent lab reports for each batch are openly available. Founder Ma puts it simply—he’s creating products that meet his own standards for his beloved cat. By being his own “super-user,” he believes he can resonate with others.
When asked about Pidan’s ambitions, Ma’s response is refreshingly humble: “If every cat-owning household in the world had just one Pidan product, that would be enough.”
